Direct Payments

DisabilityCroydon has an overall mission statement covering all all aspects of our work. Our mission aims to;
- Eliminate barriers and empower individuals with disabilities to take part fully in society within the social model of disability
- Promote the realities of self-representation and independence for people with disabilities
- Advise organisations on effective consultation and active involvement of people with disabilities in services and decision-making processes affecting their lives
- Increase awareness of disability issues among non-disabled people and organisations
The Social Model of Disability states that;
It is the barriers that cause disability, not the person's physical, mental or medical condition. It is society's responsibility to remove those barriers that deny disabled people equal access to lifestyle opportunities and the chance to maximize their own personal potential. Having no control over the support you need is one of the barriers that can prevent disabled people participating fully and equally in society.The Direct Payments Support Service (DPSS) aims to;
Support you towards achieving independence, and full & equal participation, using Direct Payments.We will try to do this by:
- Supporting you to set up and manage your Direct Payment.
- Providing full information to enable you to recruit and manage your own personal assistants and arrange other types of support as agreed in you care plan.
- Referring you to support services such as payroll services, agencies for personal assistants, advocacy etc.
- Organising training courses.
- Putting you in touch with peer support including User Group meetings.
- Ensuring that we provide you with information which is accessible and that we do our best to always use your preferred method of communication, ie. large print, email, Braille etc.
- Supporting you to identify and express any particular cultural or religious needs in relation to accessing personal assistance support.
What the DPSS cannot do;
- Decide who should be your personal assistant
