acdc Advocacy Service
acdc Advocacy is a partnership between Age Concern Croydon and DisabilityCroydon.
DisabilityCroydon provides support through acdc Advocacy to those aged from 18–54 with a physical and/or sensory impairment.
What is Advocacy?
- Supporting people to make sure decisions are made in their best interests
- Being impartial & independent
- Empowering people to make informed choices and decisions
- Ensuring people's views are heard
- Listening to and encouraging people to take control of their own lives
- Speaking up on behalf of those who feel they cannot speak for themselves
- Promoting and supporting the ability of individuals to self advocate in order to make their own views heard
The Advocate's role
- Working with someone to enable them to attend meetings and participate effectively
- Liasing with professionals
- Making phone calls or writing letters on someone's behalf
- Encouraging people to develop the confidence and skills to challenge decisions where necessary
In need of an Advocate?
The type of issues that we may support someone with would be:
- Help with care management or occupational therapy assessments
- Charging assessments
- Adult education or employment
- Help with direct payments
- Community services
- Major adaptations
- Accommodation/Housing
- Home care & care packages
- Help when access requirements are not met
- Adult abuse
- Some healthcare issues particularly when you feel you have not been dealt with or spoken to in an acceptable manner.
